PLEASE!, PLEASE! Do Not Give Out Your Banking Information
Two commonly reported frauds were reported to police on August 26th, 2015 and have seen two Lindsay residents lose nearly $8000.00 in cash to offshore criminals.
In the first reported fraud a Lindsay resident was contacted by a male party who portrayed themselves as an employee of the CIBC who told the victim that their credit card had been compromised. The fraudster convinced the victim to turn over personal banking information and then over the course of several conversations advised the victim that he was working in conjunction with the police to catch the people responsible for compromising their card. As part of this scheme the victim was convinced to wire money via Western Union to several offshore accounts. The fraud commenced at 7:00am yesterday and by early afternoon the victim was out almost $6000.00.
In the second incident the classic Microsoft scam was used. On August 18th, 2015 the victim was contacted by a male posing as a Microsoft representative. He claimed for a fee of $19.00 he could “clean up” her computer and make it run faster. The victim provided their credit card information and later discovered that instead of having their computer cleaned up they had their bank account cleaned out. The investigation is continuing but there is a possibility the victim may be out over $1000.00.
Police would like to remind people to never give out your personal banking information to anyone over the telephone, especially if it is a “cold call”. You should always take the time to check out the callers story with a credible source.
