Fraud By Text Alert

On Thursday November 26th, 2015 KLPS were contacted by a Lindsay resident who had been the subject of a fraudulent text which resulted in a Rogers account being opened in their name.

The resident indicated that they received a text from [email protected] which allows a person to text through bell.ca. The text included  a message indicating that the residents  Visa associated to their Apple account was about to expire and provided a link to click on that allowed the resident to update their Visa and Social Insurance number, which they did. A short time later the resident was contacted by Rogers inquiring about the account that they were trying to open. It appears that the senders of the text had used the residents SIN number to attempt to open a Rogers account. The resident has since cancelled the credit card which did not incur any charges.

Police believe that the 7802970009 number was “spoofed”  and used to provide the link to the resident via text.bell.ca. Please be cautious when receiving any request for your credit card or personal information and make sure that you can confirm the validity of the request before you provide any information.
