WestJet Fraud Alert

An alert Lindsay woman avoided falling prey to the most recent fraud attempt in our area. On Monday January 19th, 2015 a Lindsay woman was contacted by a person claiming to be a representative from WestJet. The representative indicated that WestJet was offering the woman $988.00 toward her next WestJet flight. In return she was requested to provide personal and credit card information. Thankfully she did not provide any of this information and avoided the scam. It was revealed that the callers were using “call spoofing” so it appeared that the call was coming from a local number. A check of the WestJet website indicates that they are aware of this scam. They do not participate in any type of telemarketing and do not share any guest information.

Police are reminding area residents to be vigilant when receiving calls from anyone wanting you to share personal or financial information over the telephone. For more tips and information on ongoing scams please visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud centre website at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/ .
